Hello world!

Welcome to the WordPress-powered BenClark.com. I'm in the process of importing my LJ entries, so forgive me my use of the default template. Ultimately, I'm going to try to go back to the MovableType "look and feel."

Fair warning: I am currently hosting this web server out of my apartment. It's running on my Debian "sarge" box which also doubles as my MythTV and media server. Uptime has thus far been exceptional, as has its connectivity, but I make no guarantees. Eventually I'll probably be forced to move this site to a dedicated server.

Post-Surgery, Revisited

Well, it's been a week since my surgery and I just returned from the dentist's office with a clean bill of health. All I need to do for the next couple of weeks is rinse the wounds with peroxide and mouthwash and try to keep my mouth clean.

Post-Surgery Update

Well, the wisdom teeth extraction went fine. Thanks for all the well-wishing, but apparently either your thoughts and prayers worked like a charm or they weren't really needed (depends on how you look at it), because I feel 90% normal and getting better by the hour. I'm not on any sort of pain medication right now. I'm taking some sort of steroid for the swelling, which is negligible anyway, and penicillin to prevent infection.

Life Update?

Good grief, it's been a while since I actually said anything in my journal.

Since my Indiana trip, I have been tired - very tired. I don't really know why. I just haven't been able to catch up on sleep.

PayPal Interest Rate

Apparently PayPal accounts that have elected to participate in the money market thing they offer are earning upwards of 3% right now. 3%! Not six months ago (to my best recollection) it was less than one percent. . . shocking.

I kind of wish I had money to put in it right now.

Pink Floyd Reunites!

It was confirmed today that Roger Waters will join Pink Floyd to perform at the Live8 concert in Hyde Park on 2nd July.

No F***ING way. Link

Greetings from Filesharing Configuration Hell

I *HATE* SAMBA! Why can't I get this to work? The only method of file sharing in my home network that actually seems to work right now is SFTP, but it maxes out around 5 Mb.

Helping you move is a debt payable in blood...

Piled Higher and Deeper - This one really makes me laugh. Especially the "helping you move is a debt payable in blood" part. Although I linked to a specific comic, take the time to read the whole archive. Or better yet, buy the books. (And while you're at it, buy them for me, too.)

I'll have some fries with that blog post.

Wil Wheaton made a really great, heartfelt post last night that inspired a few thoughts of my own about the nature of online journals.

Dist-upgrade ... because I can!

While I dist-upgrade my Debian box to sarge-stable (unbelievable... never thought it'd happen), I thought I'd update my Quicken records.

For the record, I spent $109.91 on gas to go to Bloomington and back. Which makes me right: it was cheaper to drive than fly.

Update: I had an uptime of 10 days 2 hours. But the kernel-image was updated, so a restart is required. Bummer.

Lobster Magnet?

"You got a lobster and you got a magnet . . ."

The RISC of moving to Intel

Not exactly breaking news, but yesterday Steve (Steve!) announced that Apple is switching to Intel chips in 2006-2007.

Apple.

Intel processors.

*pop*

I'm worried that this move will take us away from the cutting edge. I mean, Intel isn't exactly sporting when it comes to picking the right technologies to put in their chipsets. Anyone remember the first Pentium 4 chipsets? RAMBUS?

Life Begins Again

As I told you two weeks ago, the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex album is really, really good. I suggest you grab a copy ASAP.

Indiana Trip Recap

Hrmm... where to start? There's so much to talk about, and only an hour for lunch. Let's tackle the obvious: I visited Bloomington last week. Those of you that I have listed as friends got the distinct pleasure of hearing my phone posts (and reading the transcriptions), but I'll summarize here for you more-anonymous readers.

Back from Indiana

I'm back in Tallahassee as of 9pm Saturday. Comprehensive blogging will be .. tomorrow? Yeah, tomorrow.

Leaving for Indiana

Turning off the computer now. My LiveJournal readers will have some phone posts later that I hope some of you have the patience to transcribe for others. Best wishes.
