My new job & How I spent my summer vacation

I'll lead with the big news first: I now work for Jackson River as a Web Producer!

Today was my first day, and I think it went well. I still need to get up to speed, but I'm optimistic that full speed isn't too far away. The group at Jackson River seems like a great group, a cool group, and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better.

JR is a "virtual company," which is to say that they have no physical office. All work is done over e-mail, phone, or IM. It's a novel experience to work under this model, but if I set up my work environment correctly, I think I'll be even more productive than I would be at some cubicle in a beige-tinted office building.

(Or, to put it another way, it's damn cool to be able to work from home!)

They also have a love for Drupal, so I'll get to keep working with my favorite CMS! (Of course, the fact that they work exclusively with Drupal was the primary reason I applied for the position...)

And if nothing else, it feels good to be a productive member of society again. Now that I'm working full time again, Maggie and I have moved forward with finding an apartment. It'll feel like we're actually living here instead of just hanging out in other peoples' homes. :)

So, looking back on the last couple of months since we left Tallahassee, it feels like I had a genuine, old-fashioned summer vacation. I did manage to finish a few projects here and there, learn a few new Drupal tricks, and keep my dev skills sharp, but I also enjoyed the time away from troubleshooting printer problems and Internet Explorer JVM compatibility issues.

So... vacation, over. Work, begin!
