Old Drupal Install

Still working on converting site to Drupal

Exactly one year ago today, I had just installed Drupal at BenClark.com and I posted a "hello world" to prove it. A year later, I am still working on finishing the content migration from WordPress to Drupal. (Tsk tsk on me...)

Website changes and updates

I am working on updating the content and theme of this website. If you encounter a missing page or "unauthorized" errors, know that this is only temporary. In the meantime, the Twitter updates should still display and the blog archive will remain intact.

What's New? Road Trip!

Tonight begins my 5,000 mile road trip! My friend Josh and I are getting into my 2008 Toyota Matrix after I get off of work. We'll be driving from Tallahassee, FL, straight to Boulder, CO, on I-70 (through Missouri & Kansas). We're estimating that to be a 25 hour stretch. Then after a day or two in Boulder, we go to Moab, UT, and finish up around Las Cruces, NM, before heading back on I-10.

This is my first Drupal-powered blog post

This is my first Drupal-powered blog post here at benclark.com, and I'm proud to report that it posted just fine.

Upgrading Mac mini

I'm very proud of myself: last night, I upgraded the hard drive and memory in my Mac mini. Seeing as how not one part of the Mac mini is "user serviceable," this meant I had to crack open the case using a putty knife, amongst other things. But everything went through nice and smoothly, and the new hard drive -- 320 GB -- has a clean install of Leopard on it.

Going on a Cruise

It would seem that I am going on a cruise in late October. This will be my first ever cruise. We are leaving out of Miami for 7 days around the eastern Caribbean.

The trip was masterminded by Nick and Roberta, my married friends who live in D.C., and I will (quite unfortunately) be going unaccompanied. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to a great time and an even greater bill.

If anyone has been on a cruise, I'd love some pointers. I'm a noob.

My finger didn't deserve this

On Saturday morning, while exiting my car at Bagelheads on Apalachee Pkwy, I slammed my left index finger into my car door.

Actually, I somehow closed and latched the door while my finger was in between the closed driver's door and the closed rear driver's side passenger door. If that doesn't make sense, then nevermind --- the point I'm trying to make is that it hurt like hell, but I don't think I'm going to lose the nail.

Falling Off The Edge Of The World

People throw around the word "neglect" so much that it loses all meaning. Yeah, yeah, I haven't updated this blog in a month or so. I feel your pain. I just haven't had a whole heck of a lot to update about. Here's a real brief overview of what's been going on:

(1) Work is the same, good or bad. I'm settling in to the day-to-day patterns.

(2) I went to visit some friends in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area one weekend this past month, and I spent some time contemplating a move up there. I'm still thinking very seriously of it, and more to be updated on that subject later on.

If only I could find my feet, I could drive

Hrm, let's ignore the fact that I neglected this blog for the entire month of March. Time for one of my marathon bi-monthly updates in which I try to bring everyone up to speed with my goings-on.

Yeah, I'm just not good at this.

Every few weeks or so, I remember that I have a blog here. There's only a handful of people who read this, but that doesn't mean I should treat you like second-class citizens, right? Exactly. Yeah, I'm just not good at this.

Emergence from the land of technology

I've been working a lot these past few weeks.

iPhone in sick, 'cause I just gotta buy an iPhone!

When I bite into an Apple iPhone, I get the sensation that I'm flying high above the clouds on a magic carpet powered by technological superiority.

Inspirations a-plenty; implementations, delayed.

I have stumbled upon probably the best collection of inspirational web designs I've ever seen. I wish I had the command over color that some of these designers have (see example, right). Maybe I should just pair up with a talented graphic designer, and together we can take over the world.

Besides, there's only, like, 8 bucks in here

I like TV on Monday nights. I get to watch Heroes and Studio 60, and tonight's episodes were both very enjoyable.

I started to import a bunch of old entries (actually, about 500), but I had a moment where I realized they're entirely uncensored and I have neither the time nor the inclination to go through and check them all for appropriateness. They're saved as internal drafts for the moment; I may select a few 'important' ones for publishing down the line.

What'd I miss?

Okay, so I drop off the face of the planet for what seems like a few days, and suddenly it's November. And not just 'November,' but smack dab in the middle of November.

I've created a new WordPress theme. You're (probably) seeing it right now. I like it. No B.S. like fonts, colors, or graphics -- just pure fixed-width text goodness. I call it alt.newsgroup.theme in honor of the bygone years of Usenet, UNIX terminals, and dial-in BBSes. Feel free to use it on your own site.

August Update

I'm just not good at this three blog thing. I apologize for not updating this one much lately.

We are now in the month of August, so allow me to quickly hit all the marks for July:

I saw Pirates of the Carribean 2, and hated it.

My grandfather came to visit in July. It was really nice to see him, and I hope he can return again soon and/or that I can go up to Virginia to visit.

Purporting elitism while secretly watching '40 Year Old Virgin'

There was a recent Newsweek article published on the topic of Netflix Guilt:

Good work, Buzzbomb! Today you've earned your steel wool cupcakes!

Out of nowhere, the old cartoon C.O.P.S. popped into my head. I used to watch this every afternoon back when it was on. I think they played it on either WGN or USA. I loved this show. I didn't realize that it had been released to DVD, but finding that out made my day.

So then I started looking at other DVDs that Shout! Factory has made available:

Do You Like to Obsess Over Fuel Economy?

If so, fueleconomy.gov has a service for you. My MPG allows you to track the fuel consumption of your vehicle(s), and by contributing to the database of real world fuel economy, you can see how your vehicle ranks amongst others of varying models and years. I'll start logging as soon as I fill up again, which in my V6 Toyota Tacoma pickup shouldn't be much more than a few days from now.

The Coolest Guitar Ever

The coolest guitar ever (that isn't really a guitar) is a Y-shaped string instrument called a Tritare. Leave it to the Canadians to come up with something this weird (and undeniably awesome); I would fully expect to hear this in a Rush album from the year 2112.

Personal finance is the thorn in my side

This is part one of what I suspect will be many posts referring to my personal finances. The gist of the situation is that I've been taking some things--student loans, credit cards--for granted over the last few years as I completed degree after degree, but now I've entered the workforce as a non-student and I'm finding that I'm lagging behind my peers in financial confidence. As such, I'm utilizing the power of the Internet to play catch-up. I've been finding some great advice all over the Web, and today's find was no exception.

Mac OS X Leopard Screenshots?

Two screenshots of what apparently is a beta of Mac OS X 10.5 have been leaked, revealing what appears to be a desktop switcher and even Internet Explorer running natively in OS X. [digg]
